In ancient Greece, the wreath of Laurel leaves was a symbol dedicated to Apollo, and later adopted by Romans as a symbol of triumph and achievement.

Apollo fell in love with Daphne, a nymph who didn’t feel the same way about him, so she then transformed into a laurel tree as an escape. Apollo used the laurel leaves from the tree and wore it as a crown.

The ancient Pythian Games were held in honor of Apollo as the god of music, poetry, and sports. Winners were crowned with a laurel wreath. Apollo is the god of poets and writers, and the term poet laureate that we use today comes from this myth.

This little oval medal has tiny engraved laurel leaves and a bevelled edge. It has a nice weight, and is suspended on a 1.0mm width box chain that catches the light.
